The Last-Minute Local Gift Guide!

Posted by admin305 at December 22, 2011

It’s not too late! Though the first Hanukkah candles have been lit and Santa is loading up his sleigh, great last-minute gifts are out there to help brighten up the holidays for even the toughest critic on your list. And Chelsea happens to be the procrastinator’s paradise when it comes to holiday shopping! Check out these pop-up retailers that have sprung up in the neighborhood just in time to bail you out of any gift-giving jam. (For further reading, Racked has a great holiday pop-up shop map.)

Jingle
Where: Chelsea Market (enter at 9th Avenue between 15th and 16th Streets)
Open until: December 23
What: Now in its fifth year, Jingle brings together a well-edited group of 20 retailers covering everything artsy, crafty, quirky, handmade and just plain cool. Check out Jingle’s Facebook page for the full list of vendors, highlighted (in our humble opinion) by Brooklyn-based businesses like Gauge, Twig Terrariums and kitschy stocking-stuffers Fred Flare.

A Startup Store
Where: 144 10th Avenue (at 19th Street)
Open until: January 12
What: Online shopping has become the dominant form of gift-hunting for many, but sometimes you want to see the goods in the flesh before making a purchase. Enter this hip pop-up shop, which collects some of the best e-retailers around (like Birchbox, Quirky and Of A Kind) and puts them in an actual brick-and-mortar store. It’s a great idea, but it won’t last long: A Startup Store will change concepts completely next month. Check out this Daily News story for more on this interesting experiment.

Artists & Fleas
Where: Chelsea Market (enter on 10th Avenue and 15th Street)
Open until: December 31
What: For accessories and apparel on the cutting edge, check out Artists & Fleas, the long-running Williamsburg market that has opened a Chelsea Market outpost for two weeks. Over 30 designers made the L Train trip to Chelsea for the occasion. There are even day-before-Christmas hours for the real slackers!
